THE SHORT VERSION
Work makes more sense when you separate three questions: What are the rules? What is actually happening? What can you do with that information? Emerald calls those Rules, Reality and Strategy.
One workplace issue can have three different answers.
A workplace decision can be legal and still be a poor management decision. A career strategy can make sense and still fail because the labor market changed. A company can announce hundreds of jobs before those jobs are actually available.
That is why Emerald does not treat every workplace question as if it is asking the same thing.

“My employer changed something at work. What does that mean for me?”
Rules: Is there a law, regulation, policy, agreement or formal process governing the change?
Reality: Why might the employer be doing it? Is this happening across the industry? How is it affecting workers in practice?
Strategy: What information should you gather? What options are available? What decision do you need to make?
Mixing those questions together is how people end up hearing “that's legal” as though it means “that's fair,” or receiving résumé advice when the actual problem is a shrinking market.
The goal is not to make work simple. It is to make the information around work clearer.
